I was first introduced to SHFM through Michigan State University’s student chapter in hopes to find others with a passion for food. Through access to SHFM’s networking events including the National Conference and YPC/CIC, I quickly learned foodservice is not only restaurants, but also contract foodservice and workplace hospitality.
During my first year in SHFM, I immediately understood the significance of this organization- they are constantly striving to bring the best to our industry. Whether it be through numerous committees, fundraising initiatives, speaker series or networking events, SHFM brings people in our industry together. Each event I have been a part of always has an underlying theme of industry improvement and development.
When I became President of the MSU student chapter and the Student Board Advisor to the Foundation, I made it my mission to increase student involvement in SHFM. I connected with the Foundation to bring in industry professionals to speak to the club about their career and current position. Being able to hear from industry professionals about their career journey inspired me and others to pursue contract foodservice after learning about the numerous opportunities it has to offer. I also collaborated with the Foundation to set up guided tours of SHFM accounts in Chicago during the club’s annual trip. These tours provided valuable exposure to industry professionals which allowed me to create lasting network connections that helped me with my current position.
During my first-year post-grad, SHFM set me up with two mentors, Victoria Vega and Kelly Meadows, as guiding forces in my new career. Victoria and I would meet during my lunch breaks to talk through any challenges I faced including Impostor Syndrome which loomed over my first year on the job. She helped me understand how common this experience is amongst even the most senior of management and helped me feel more comfortable owning my work. With her industry experience and thoughtful advice, we were able to figure out the game plan to tackle any burning questions.
I remember hearing someone say, “Outside we are competitors, but at SHFM, we are all family.” I have seen this time and time again, especially when a member is in tough times, SHFM does not hesitate to raise their hand to assist. I am proud to be part of an organization that takes care to get to know each of their members and find ways to support. I feel fortunate to have a supportive group of managers that encourages my involvement with SHFM and can see the positive impact it has made on my career.
