In your Rising Star application, you talk about your non-linear journey in hospitality. How did SHFM and our members help direct your career today?

When I joined SHFM, I was new to my company and new to this sector of the industry. I wasn’t really sure where I stood or what my future would hold. My connections through the organization helped me understand just how big our sector of the industry really is, and how much opportunity for professional growth really exists. More importantly, the people I’ve met through SHFM are some of the most encouraging, driven, and inspiring people I know. I always leave SHFM events eager to work on myself and my own leadership style.

Many young professionals deal with Imposter Syndrome, what advice would you give to your peers about overcoming this obstacle?

FEEDBACK. It’s impossible to know the value you bring to others if you don’t hold yourself accountable. Create an environment around you that empowers others to be open and honest about what you do and don’t bring to the table.

You have grown into a leadership role in both your career and with SHFM, how did you prepare for these roles?

Everyone in SHFM echoes this sentiment: say yes! Take risks and don’t be afraid to take on a responsibility that you don’t have experience with.  I leaned on others to support me in areas that I feel less confident in, both in SHFM and with my company. I also take classes outside of work to help whittle down areas of leadership I feel I’m weaker in.

What has your involvement with SHFM taught you about leadership?

There isn’t one right formula for leadership, but all of the senior leaders I’ve met through SHFM speak to how impactful their life outside of work is to their role. To have a sustainable growth trajectory and set expectations for your team, I’ve learned that you have to focus on your personal health and make sure that your work-life balance is upheld to promote a positive environment around you.

Finally, our traditional final question: What and where was the best meal you have ever had?

Oh man. For me, food is about human connection and sharing a memorable experience. I’d have to say it was the Champagne and cold Joe’s Pizza that my wife and I had the night we got engaged.
