The Society for Hospitality and Foodservice Management (SHFM) Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports the next generation of leaders through student outreach programs, university partnerships and military connections. The Foundation is committed to the continued growth of our vital industry, which drives productivity and morale for millions of American workers every day. By creating partnerships with universities, the SHFM Foundation paves the way for these rising leaders to learn about our industry through networking, engagement, and learning.
One of the signature programs of the Foundation is called the SHFM Foundation Fellowship Program. Launched in 2023, through an application process, student and military Fellows are selected for the year-long program. During the program, each fellow will be paired with two industry leading mentors who are members of SHFM. Participants will also receive complimentary attendance at the SHFM National Conference, Young Professional Summit, and Critical Issues Conference. The goal of the program is to introduce and inspire students to join the workplace hospitality and amenities in foodservice industry – with the endgame of students getting job opportunities through the lasting impressions they make.
Over the lifetime of the program, the SHFM Foundation Fellowship program has hosted 27 students and military members from several schools including: the US Air Force, Michigan State University, Johnson and Wales University, Virginia State University, Boston University, Delaware State University, the Culinary Institute of America, and Virginia Tech. In addition to the Fellowship Program, SHFM has a total of 3 Student Chapters at partner universities, with more chapters being added later this year, and over 50 active student and faculty members in our organization.
The commitment to our university partnerships, students, and programs is not possible without the generous funds provided by our sponsors and fundraising events, including the Foundation golf tournament and yearly gala. Through these events, the SHFM Foundation can give back to our partners and ensure a successful talent pipeline is visible and present to our membership during the SHFM National Conference and other events. The SHFM Foundation is looking forward to more continued growth and partnerships with universities this year.
