Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Council - July 2023
Celebrating National Disability Independence Day
This month, we come together to commemorate National Disability Independence Day, a momentous occasion to celebrate the achievements and contributions of people with disabilities, both seen and unseen.
The Americans with Disabilities Act was passed on July 26th, 1990 to create the first equality declaration for Americans living with a disability. It prohibits discrimination by both state and local governments and sets important accessibility standards for public places. It also helps protect these individuals from discrimination in the workplace.
We believe that an inclusive workplace is a thriving workplace and our council is committed helping our members foster an environment where all employees feel valued and empowered to bring their unique perspectives to the table. Accessibility should be a top priority and we should all continuously strive to make all of our physical and digital spaces welcoming and accommodating to everyone. We should all aim to remove all barriers to create equal opportunities for all, and beyond the physical workplace, we should extend fostering a culture of empathy and understanding.
Building on this topic, please mark your calendars and join us for a free virtual event, Conversations that Matter: Seeing the Unseen, where we will explore strategies for creating an inclusive workplace for those living with unseen disabilities, diagnoses, or conditions on August 16 at 1:00pm ET. During this event, we will illuminate the triumphs and struggles faced by individuals who manage invisible challenges and some actionable ways to ensure these team members thrive in the workplace.
Portuguese Carne Spit & Garlic Bread
By Maria Cleaveland
8 servings |Prep Time 15 minutes | Cook Time 30-45
Ingredients
3lbs Sirloin Steak
Garlic Salt
Fresh Black Pepper
French Loaf Bread
¼ lb Soft Butter
5 cloves Fresh Garlic Chopped
Directions
From a trusted butcher and buy Sirloin Steak that is 1.5 to 2” thick.
Cut steak into 1.5” inch cubes.
Prepare coals for slow grilling sirloin.
Light charcoal in a chimney. When coals are grey ashy place into a wheelbarrow or lid of a garbage inside your Weber grill.
Pack steak onto skewers, pitchfork or sticks from a bay leaf tree (soak skewers or sticks).
Slow cook the sirloin about 2” from the coals until desired temperature. Note that the inside pieces are protected so all members of the group will be happy. When the sirloin is done use a large fork to pull the pieces into a large stockpot and bring to the table. Beware sirloin will continue to cook due to residual heat.
While the Sirloin is grilling assign garlic bread duty to someone who will not burn it when placed into the oven top shelf to toast.
Mince garlic and mash into soft butter.
Cut French Bread lengthwise and spread garlic butter mixture onto each side.
Broil on high to melt the butter and toast the bread being sure not it does not burn. This is a prefect job for the youngsters in the crowd as they take the job seriously.
Serve Carne Spit & Garlic Bread with a big green salad and your favorite beans.
If the garlic bread falls into the pot of Carne Spit it is a sign of good luck.
