Summer Internship Program 2015

You are 16, raised on the Food Network and enrolled in a culinary program in your high school.  You see stars in your eyes as you know you are going to be the next big thing in the culinary world.  Students across the country have these same dreams and many don’t know how to get the experience needed to get there.
SHFM, in partnership with C-CAP (Careers Through Culinary Arts Programs), has been offering inner city high school students with the opportunity to gain that experience through our Summer Internship Program.  Started over 10 years ago, students are partnered with locations to provide them with hands on practical experience. 

The process begins with the application process as the students apply for the job and then go through an interview with the C-CAP staff.  When possible, they are even interviewed by the unit chefs or managers.  They then go through an orientation where they learn that this experience will be much different than anything they have experienced before.  They will need to show up on time, do their work and follow instructions given to them.  And if not, they run the risk of being counseled or even terminated from the internship, a hard lesson to learn.

For 6 weeks, they work side by side with full time employees.  While the students gain invaluable experience, so too the employees gain as they mentor these students.  It really is a win-win for everyone.
This summer, through the generosity of the SHFM membership during our fundraising events, we were able to place 15 students in NYC locations.  We look forward to continuing the program and offering more spots next year.
