2015 National Conference:
Students Soar in Scholarship Showdown
On Thursday, October 29, during the national conference, the 2015 SHFM Scholarship Showdown took place. The event, in conjunction with the SHFM Foundation, was funded by an array of sponsors including Aryzta, LLC., The French’s Food Company, Hormel, Major Products Co., Inc., MARS Foodservices and Savory Creations International.
This year’s event offered incredible opportunities to well deserving students. Each student had the chance to be a part of a mentoring program with corporate chefs during the gumbo competition. The participants had the chance to prepare and serve their own versions of gumbo for the attendees to sample and vote on the one they enjoyed most. The Showdown was a great chance for some incredibly talented individuals to showcase their culinary skills.
To the victors go the spoils. By the end of the Showdown, the three participants went home with some amazing prizes. Rounding out the three, Terriell Willaims, of the John Besh Foundation, went home with a $2,000 scholarship and will soon be attending the International Culinary Center in March. Second place went to Cynthia Hutto, Delgado Community College, earning $3,000 and is currently in her first year at Delgado. Jerod Goudy, of NOCCA, went away with the top prize including a $5,000 scholarship. His take on the recipe utilized some non-traditional ingredients including Indian spices. Jerod will be attending college and is actively seeking a university.
